Boxing Day 1956

‘Do you ever come across him, Win?’ Aunt Doll was almost whispering.

They were huddled around the fire, Nanny in her armchair, Aunt Doll opposite, and dining chairs had been moved over for everyone else. They looked like they were at the doctor’s.

Mum mumbled something I didn’t catch. They all turned round and gawped at me. I put my head down and carried on playing dominoes with Ron, Pattie, and Barbara. Little George had gone out with Big George, and they had been ordered to take Black Gary with them. That was hours ago. It was getting dark outside.

I caught a few ‘mmm’s and then ‘. . . arrangements to see her or anything?’ I felt another turn to look at me, but I was studying the dominoes. ‘. . . bet she’s giving him a dog’s life . . .’

‘Hurry up Rob, it’s your turn.’ Ron nudged me.

‘He was holding out his hand for my fare, and I said, “I’m Flo, her sister, don’t you remember?”’ Aunt Flo had forgotten to hush her voice.

‘How could he ever forget you, after what you did?’ Mum said. She sounded really ratty.

‘Come on, Winnie, we don’t need to go over all that again,’ Nanny said.

‘Rob, go and put the kettle on and make us a lovely pot of tea. Ron, Barbara, you go and help her. Go on. And Pattie, the coal bucket’s a bit sparse.’ Aunt Doll always tried to make everything feel like a game and I knew they wanted us out of the way. Ron and I trooped off, dragging our shoulders to make ourselves look pathetic and making long moaning noises. Barbara copied us and we ran down the passage laughing.
